All Booths Meet ISO Standards
Booths are needed for simultaneous interpretation. Whether built-in or mobile versions, these booths must meet certain technical requirements.
ISO standards exist for built-in booths (ISO 2603) and mobile booths (ISO 4043). Refer to the following standards before installing built-in booths, and always demand booths that comply with these standards:
- # of booths: one booth per active language
- Size: a minimum width of 1.6 metres for mobile booths and 2.5 metres for built-in booths
- Location: a maximum distance of 30 meters from the speakers or screen
- Visibility: non-reflective glass on front and sides of the booth and a good view of speakers and projection screens
- Sufficient light, air, sound: booths must be equipped with good lighting, ventilation, and soundproofing
- Equipment: one console, headset and lamp per interpreter

Infrared Wireless System
Simultaneous interpreting is a must for efficient international meetings. The advantages of infrared wireless transmission make it perfect for this application and a convenient alternative to conventional hard-wired systems. Infrared interpretation systems are secure and confidential as the infrared light is contained within the meeting room and thereby ensures that the proceedings cannot be heard outside the room. This also allows systems to be used in adjacent rooms without interfering with each other. Another advantage of infrared is that the receivers are wireless, allowing delegates the freedom of movement.
Infrared wireless systems are available in both analogue (for up to 4 channels) and digital (allowing up to 32 channels). Infrared systems are powerful and flexible enough for use in almost any setting—public address, conference, museum, exhibition and court rooms. They are also used to assist hearing impaired people.
Make sure every speaker is understood—it’s never been so easy! A wireless multichannel infrared system is the most reliable way to enable conference participants to follow every word from their interpreters. Up to 32 channels are available to transmit the floor language and up to 31 translations. Whatever the size or shape of the room, receivers can easily be placed to provide reception of all the translated languages.
Conference Microphone Systems
- Board rooms
- Focus groups
- School boards and PTAs
- Conference and meeting facilities
- Classrooms and educational seminars
- Parliamentary and government settings
- In plain English, conference mic systems are a type of audio equipment that enable meeting participants to hear and be heard by each other.
Soundproof Interpreters’ Booths
Interpretation booths provide a soundproof workspace for the interpreters. This soundproofing ensures both that your participants can conduct their meetings without disruption and that our interpreters have a safe haven for the “heat of the battle”. This is especially important for events with multiple language combinations in which three or more interpreters are working at the same time. .
The soundproofing also means that even for an event with few participants, each and every word must be channelled to the booth via microphone to allow the interpreters to hear and interpret it.
Quick set-up
- microphone for each two delegates and the chairman
- infrared transmitters and radiators to broadcast translations throughout the room
- a central control unit and power supply
- a multi-channel interpreter’s desk housed in an attractive booth for each language
- hand-held or clip-on receivers for delegates who need to move around the hall
- interpreters available upon request
Event interpretation on-the-go
For groups requiring more portable equipment, WCIS provides the Williams Sound Tour Guide System. A portable interpretation system, often referred to as portable translation equipment, can be used for tours, business groups who travel to different locations with their own interpreter or small meetings where the event organizer prefers an economical and easy-to-operate system that does not require hiring a specialized technician. The need for mobility and/or ease of setup is the priority when using such a system for simultaneous interpretation.
A portable system, also called a bodypack or belt-pack system, consists of one or more portable transmitters, and receivers. The light-weight, battery-powered portable transmitter can be hand held, placed on a hard surface like a table, clipped on the belt, placed in a pocket or carried around the neck using a lanyard. The same goes for the receivers.
